FIFA Health and Fitness for Female Football Players
The joy of playing football sometimes must be tempered by the fact that when you step onto the pitch, you accept the possibility that you may get injured. Most of the research in football medicine is about men, mostly professionals. Research on women has a long way to go to catch up with the volume of work done on men. Our goal here is to summarize what we know about women’s football injuries. Click here to read more...
Iselin's Disease
Girls 9 to 11 years of age can develop tenderness on the outside of their foot, and this is often a case of Iselin's Disease. Iseline's Disease is a self-limiting disorder of active children that spontaneously resolves with completion of growth.
Typically, the child complains of localized pain on activity that resolves with rest. Physical examination reveals tenderness at the fifth metatarsal base.
As shown in the picture on the left, the soreness is caused by apophysis, a secondary center of ossification at the proximal end of the fifth metatarsal (and can be mistaken radiographically as a fracture site). Treatment, when needed, is primarily limitation of activity until the pain resolves. As the child grows, the ossification merges with the fifth metatarsal and becomes part of the normal bone structure.
